Blowing on my DSL modem to cool it down restores the network connection. Which confirms my suspicion that it is overheating under load.

need a small fan to force air over it then ;-)

I've got a spare 100mm fan I'm not using. I might have a power supply I can hack to run it. It's been hot here lately.

@gomerx Good idea. If it keeps disconnecting, contact your ISP about a replacement. Or see whether #Best_Buy still carries them.

Actually this is a new modem. Same exact model, but the old one didn't have this problem. (I accidentally dumped water on the old one)

I have mine on it's side so it gets better air circulation ;-)

Hey there's better ways of cleaning that porn from your router!!! :-D

I might open it up to see if I can improve it. Sometimes cold solder joints generate heat.

It was unbelievable. I knocked over a glass of ice water and it went right on the thing. I tried to dry it out, but no dice.

I usually only kill keyboards that way!!

@vk7hse @gomerx I have a few usb-powered fans made from old case fan or PSU fan soldered to usb cable. I set em next to routers to keep cool

That's good to know. I wasn't sure if USB could supply enough power. This MB has 10 fan headers. I might just make an extension cable.

@gomerx it supplies 5v, which might not be as much as the fan will withstand, but is usually enough to make it go, even if at lower speed.

The standard says 5v at 500ma, I think. Not all motherboards comply though. That's 2.5 watts, which should push my fan.

@gomerx I've done maybe 5 fans, mostly PSU fans but a couple of the 5" fans, all worked with USB power.

You know, I've got several 120v to USB phone chargers I'm not using. Bet they'd power a fan just fine.

I've got old wall warts powering several things. It's easier and cheaper than buying or building something.

      @gomerx and it’s Reduce-Recycle-Reuse!

Yes. That's an extra added bonus.

@gomerx what a genius idea! Those are plentiful for pennies at goodwill too. I'll have to try that when I get home.

It works! 5v gives a nice gentle breeze from the fan. DSL modem is now barely warm rather than hot. :)

@gomerx sweet!! Glad to hear it. Was this with the phone charger?

    • Jeff Ratliff Jeff Ratliff Jon Kulp

I used the phone charger for testing. I actually just spliced a spare USB cable to a fan connector and plugged it into a USB port.

@gomerx yeah that's how I normally do it, too.
