How hard is it too be totally free software wise?
-
@lstench That depends on how determined you are. @rms does it, obviously :-) Personally, I don’…
-
I don't think it's that simple either. RMS seems to feel all or nothing. I feel like every littl…
-
@lstench Absolutely agree with you. Baby steps, I think. Not just that, but we run the risk of ad…
-
so no polaris mail... what email providers qualify?
-
Yes and the thing about freedom is that it is addictive..
-
Well what the next best to hosting your own?
-
@lstench I would say POP3 and downloading everything from the server & deleting the server copy.
-
@parlementum hmm but then know mobile sync correct
-
@lstench Aye, it is that :-)
-
@lstench I use IMAP for my mobile. But download everything to my desktop for archiving. Nothing left on ky server
-
Makes sense. Who is your email provider?
-
@lstench my own cloud server parlementum.net
-
Why did you choose not to host it yourself?
-
@lstench its my own vps, but it has multiple users and services. To host from home would be a violation of ISP ToS
-
So you do something like this http://lydiastench.com/status/url/1104
-
the initial investment in getting setup takes awhile, but I’ve been using free software since 2004; …
-
@lstench yes except more primitive :) I use abook and calcurse.
-
@lstench Also, having once been a mail administrator, I am not eager to do it again. It is worthwhile to me to pay someone else to do it.
-
@parlementum I thought that was just here with our legacy ISP cable ... I had no idea American ISPs were as bad as Canadian ones
-
lol @lnxwalt mail can be stressful. I remember the days setting up mandatory IMAP and SMTP encryption, took awhile!
-
on the topic of mail, I run encrypted IMAP+SMTP on Exim and Dovecot, Roundcube and Squirrelmail as hos…
-
If I can offer advice, don’t dive into Exim right away as it is no longer the default. However, if …
-
@lnxwalt yes I rather not spend the time as it is more valuable to me than money.
-
Apart from a wireless network card, my machine runs FaiF completely. My web&mail host uses a clean Debian install, so it should qualify.
-
Doesn't @laurelrusswurm run FaiF? I seem to remember her using #Trisquel. Just played with latest release: Sweet OS, both Light & Standard.
-
When I was living in the US, I looked into hosting plans: I think it was GreenGeeks I was considering, they were all FaiF with my needs.
-
@mjjzf @lstench FaiF as possible; flashless !Trisquel on desktop but w/ XP in virtual box for when I need photoshop http://www.ur1.ca/8010u
-
I think she is on ubuntu now, if I recall she was having some problems with trisquel. Just finis…
-
One of my host pair networks is all opensource.
-
Please tell me this is a joke?
-
It has to do with the “locked bootloader” thing they’re trying to roll out (“safeboot?”). I…
-
@laurelrusswurm @mjjzf @lstench seriously? That makes no sense
-
on that note… (rolling my eyes in advance) please get your legislators, “the lawmakers,” to stop…
-
@laurelrusswurm @lstench @ryanweal what if you build your own desktop?
-
hmm so using a host that runs only opensource qualifies you think?
-
@mohanpram I tried hard to buy kid an OS free laptop; #impossible ... to buy computer in a store in !Canada it has Windows or Mac installed
-
@ryanweal Agreed would be better if USTR/MPAA left rest of world to make our own laws, but US system is even more broken than ours
-
Here are a few Companies in Canada that sell Linux systems: http://www.debian.org/distrib/pre-installed#ca The list may not be up to date.
-
@laurelrusswurm Dell used to sell #FreeDOS computers that were usually out-of-the-box ready for Ubuntu. Not sure if #Canada included.
-
@gomerx Yes, you can special order them, but you can't walk into a retail store and test drive them. And they cost a lot more.
-
@lnxwalt Sporadically retailers would carry them; once Bill C-11 passes that will be even less likely
-
@lnxwalt Minister of Heritage (behind DRM law) liked being called the "ipod Minister" b/c thinks knowing what to buy indicates tech prowess
-
This is making me angry!! Can't something be done?
-
I paid extra because freedom is important to me.
-
@lstench most #Canadians don't know !copyright will harm us and our children. By the time they know #toolate #silentnewsmedia
-
If my own system is FaiF, my router as well, and my web and mail host is as well, I think that is as far as I can get?
-
Depressing. I have used a Danish selfpub business which lets you print from your own PDF - which I can definitely make in sufficient quality
-
True without dealing with the hardware issue.
-
@mjjzf I quite dislike PDFs and the supposedly "open" version doesn't impress me; it was dreadful trying to deal with them when in Windows
-
You are talking about free hardware as well? That is rather a different challenge. I have considered the Freedom Box, though.
-
Well. PDFs are exactly good for print. I would use Sigil for ePubs, but we have discussed that.
-
@mjjzf only was thinking of software when I posted. Question is once you conquer software, where do you go from there? Or is that enough?
-
I would say that depends on how much you influence others. In my job it is Windows machines, but almost everything I send out is PDFs -
-
- so if you are in a position to influence how other people use things, open standards for information exchange are a relevant thing.
-
@mjjzf I know, and it's necessary to upload PDFs via the Create Space flash uploader. Still haven't cracked open LaTex yet
-
@laurelrusswurm I have been trying to translate Sigil and Zotero, but as it turns out, there is a huge specialised terminology in ..
-
.. there. Tough.
-
@mjjzf Why translate specialized terminology? Adopt the jargon words as is? I know someone who does support in Dutch, w/en for jargon
-
Mostly metadata stuff: Compiler, binding designer, donor; there is a huge load of terms & definitions, where the translation can be unclear.
-
Don't want to send you down the rabbit hole, but... http://writtenandread.net/lyx/
-
@mjjzf No, that's great. I thought it was the other way round, that Lyx was the original and LaTex the bridge… you've saved me already :)
-
@mjjzf That said, if I learn Lxy first, is the mark-up the same in LaTex if I choose to go try that later?
-
@laurelrusswurm You can export your LyX document to LaTeX and work on with that. As I wrote, I find regular LaTeX hard to get an ..
-
.. overview of.
-
@mjjzf Well your Lyx article made me less nervous ~ I will certainly try it, thanks :)
-
@mjjzf I even "pinned" it http://www.ur1.ca/95x9a
-
@laurelrusswurm As I wrote: Only drawback is the graphics, which are a bit tricky to get nice with it.
-
@mjjzf Good thing I'm only concerned with words at this point :)
