I'm still confused. Google came up with an app called "hangouts" when they already have Google+ hangouts, which are a different thing.

Oh. That makes more sense. If you're syncing between machines and you don't have the same UID both places there could be problems.

Alright. All the important servers are patched and rebooted. Got a couple more I'll probably do tomorrow when I'm actually at work.

I hate it too, but these days kernel updates come out often enough that I'm rebooting every couple months anyway.

Oh. Yes, and invalid shell in /etc/passwd can cause problems. Or bring hilarious results.

THat's assuming it's a password problem.

Boot to single user mode and wipe your password out in /etc/passwd or /etc/shadow. That's what I usually do.
